Labels for what you make

Sauces drip, jars get wiped down and containers go from the fridge to the counter. The right film depends on where the food lives.

  • Sauces and dressings

Bottles get sticky and wiped down. Spills wipe off the film instead of soaking in.

    Gloss BOPP

  • Jams, honey and preserves

Sticky fingers and the odd spill come straight off, and the colours stay bright on the shelf.

    Gloss or matte BOPP

  • Maple syrup and oils

Drips run down the bottle, and film resists oil, so the print stays clean.

    Gloss or matte BOPP

  • Fridge and deli containers

Condensation forms every time the container comes out of the fridge, and film doesn't soak it up. Writable film takes a date in permanent marker.

    Gloss, matte or writable BOPP

  • Frozen food

Freezer labels pair the film with an adhesive made for deep cold and frost. Apply them at room temperature, before freezing.

    Freezer BOPP

  • Coffee, tea and dry goods

Bags and jars that stay dry can use paper at a lower cost. Film keeps them clean when they live by the kettle or the stove.

What goes on a food label in Canada

Most prepackaged food sold in Canada needs the same core information. Plan room for all of it before you choose a label size.

  • Main panel

The common name of the food and the net quantity in metric units.

  • Ingredients and allergens

A list of ingredients, with allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites declared.

  • Nutrition facts table

Most prepackaged foods need one, and some foods and sellers are exempt.

  • Dates

A best before date when the food keeps for 90 days or less.

  • Who made it

The name and address of the business responsible for the food.

  • English and French

Most of the required information appears in both languages, with a few exemptions.

  • The High in symbol

Since January 1, 2026, foods high in saturated fat, sugars or sodium carry Health Canada's symbol on the main panel, unless exempt.

Our guide covers the basics. It isn't legal advice, and the content of your label is your responsibility.

Planning the print

  • Dates and lot codes

Every label in a run prints the same. Leave a clear space and add dates or lot codes with a stamp or a date coder when you pack.

  • One design per product

The 250-label minimum applies to each design, so every flavour or size is its own run.

  • Required text on white

The ingredient list has to be one dark colour on white or a neutral background tinted 5% or less. Unprinted areas show the white label, so leave that panel unprinted.

  • Rolls for applicators

Labels come wound on a 3-inch core for a label applicator, and peel easily by hand for short runs.

Questions

Which material is best for food labels?

Gloss or matte BOPP for anything that gets wet, oily or chilled: it's waterproof and resists oil. Freezer labels for frozen food. Paper costs less and suits dry goods that stay dry.

Can the labels go in the fridge or freezer?

Gloss and matte BOPP hold up in the fridge. For the freezer, choose freezer labels, which use an adhesive made for deep cold. Apply them at room temperature, before freezing.

Can each label have its own best before date?

Every label in a print run is the same. Most makers leave a clear space on the label and add the date with a stamp or a date coder when they pack.

Do you check that my food label meets the rules?

We check every file for resolution, bleed and safe margins, and send you a digital proof. What the label says is up to you, so compare it with the CFIA's requirements before you approve.

What is the minimum order?

250 labels per design, with setup included. Each flavour, size or recipe counts as its own design.

Can I write on the labels?

Writable labels are matte film you mark with a permanent marker, which suits dates and batch numbers. Ballpoint and gel pens smudge on the laminate.
